Engineering

The primary responsibility of the City Engineering Department is to ensure that the publicly owned infrastructure is designed and constructed according to accepted industry standards, is maintained effectively, and serves the needs of the citizens of Emporia. The Department designs and inspects the construction of streets, storm sewers, waterlines, sanitary sewers, sidewalks, and a variety of maintenance-oriented projects. Major projects that are undertaken by the City are administered by the City Engineering Department. Generally, these projects involve major street improvements, enhancements to either the water treatment plant or the wastewater treatment plant, expansion of the municipal airport facilities, or landfill.

A significant amount of work is required to develop projects that meet either the existing needs or future needs of the community. Studies that address future water supply, sanitary sewer flows, traffic demands, drainage concerns, and changes in laws that affect safety, health, and the environment are initiated and overseen by the City Engineer's Office staff. These studies become the "first steps" toward addressing community infrastructure needs.
